During the course of the day, travel to the southern portion of the Heraklion Region.
Explore the beaches and picturesque landscapes of Matala, go swimming in the crystal-clear waters of the Libyan Sea, and take a hike to the world-famous Caves of the Village, which served as a refuge for hippies in the 1960s and 1970s.
All of these activities can be found in Matala. Admire the scenery as you look out over the bay and then take a stroll around the quaint alleys of the hamlet to look for mementos or have lunch. During this journey, you will also visit the ancient site of Gortyn, the Roman capital of the island of Crete. Gortyn was initially inhabited circa 7000 BC, and the area has been continuously inhabited ever since.
